Clark Gable did a screen test for a role in Warner Bros’ Little Caesar, but the studio heads rejected him, declaring Gable ugly and a big ape. MGM, at the urging of Lionel Barrymore, had Gable do two screen tests before signing him to a short-term contract at $350 a week. Audiences, however, had no such hesitation.
